Description: Inspired by the hippie in me, these mary janes can be made as cushy, cozy slippers OR hemp/jute soled shoes that are wearable outside! Splashing around in puddles or going on hikes is not recommended for them, of course, but for general wear they're great. With hemp cord the soles are especially tough - the fibers "mesh" with one another to make the sole more and more solid over time. Jute works great as well, though it won't hold up quite as long as hemp, the miracle fiber.

**Please note - this is a crochet pattern up for sale, not the actual items pictured!

Comment from a customer:
"Just wanted to tell you how much I love these. I made them with the jute soles for outdoor wear. To aid in the durability of the outer sole and to help keep the inner sole clean, I painted a coat of synthetic laytex rug backing to the inside of the jute sole. It worked out really well; and I thought you might want to pass this tip on to other customers."

What size hemp cord do you need for these? I know it says 2mm but the hemp cord I found says 20# or 48#...will one of those work?

Question about pattern
By Bridget

This is a beautiful pattern. I have a question about the oval spiral shape of the sole. I noticed that after I worked one round, there was one stitch sitting in the row beneath that was unworked. Am I supposed to skip that and start the next round on the first stitch from the last round, or am I supposed to start the new round on that unworked stitch, thus moving back the beginning of each round? Thanks in advance.
